As a cosplayer and an avid convention-goer, I always have a favorite convention that I like to go to. It can be for multiple reasons: the cosplay community, the panels, the artist alley, or even just the amount of times my photo will be taken! I have been to many conventions myself, and I have to say that Anime Midwest always checks off all of these for me. Personally, I have attended Anime Midwest since 2015- for three years now- and I certainly have to say that it is my absolute favorite convention that I go to. It really has everything for me!
When I first attended Anime Midwest back in 2015, I honestly could not believe how open everyone was. It was not my first convention- that one being Wizard World back in 2012- but it was the first one that I went to that I was truly comfortable in. I was cosplaying Morty from Rick and Morty, and I was so scared that I was not cosplaying correctly. Yet, almost as soon as I entered, I was greeted by warmth and kindness.
After all these years, I am still greeted with that same openness. Just this past convention, I wore a new cosplay, and honestly, I was a tad nervous about wearing it. Yet, everyone around me only told me positive things about it! It felt so great to be back into a convention that I felt the most comfortable at, even if I was doing something new.
One of the things that Anime Midwest does well each and every year is being able to take care of their con attendees. Unlike many other conventions, Anime Midwest constantly has different things that makes sure that those that are there are comfortable. For example, many that are attending can get incredibly hungry, especially since they are moving around so much. What does the con do? They give them free food! Always located at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Anime Midwest provides free ramen, rice, salad, and bread- as well as soft drinks- to their guests. The con-runners gives them a nice space to sit back, relax, and eat, giving them a break from the hustle-and-bustle of the convention to sate their hunger and tiredness. As well, they make sure that their guests are hydrated by providing lots of water, as well as many places for the attendees to get either coffee or other assortment of drinks. When I spoke of kindness before, this was exactly what I meant; it is honestly so rare to see a convention do all of this for their guests!
In general, I would have to say that Anime Midwest is not only my favorite convention to go to in the Midwest, but it is my most favorite convention to go to at all! Anime Midwest is a refreshing look into a top-notch convention that will surely make you satisfied every time that you go. The convention is always within the first week or two of July, so make sure to add it to your calendar of fun things to do in the summer!
