For all the music enthusiasts out in the anime world, Anime Midwest this year did not disappoint in the concert aspect. With a lineup consisting of some of the most well-known musicians on Youtube, such as Schmoyoho and Epic Rap Battle. Having the opportunity to be able to see your favorite content creators from Youtube, is such a memorable thing. Being a huge fan of the Gregory Brothers, or their more recognizable alias Schmoyoho. This group notably known for their “Songify” series on Youtube. They can songify anything from news clips, to movies, and even clips from other fellow Youtube videos. They had gained popularity from their autotune the news clips like: “Bed Intruder Song”, “Double Rainbow”, and “Winning”.
As a huge fan of Schmoyoho, I knew I had to get to this concert pretty early. For whatever reason, from the previous concert, the room was cleared out when I got there. So I was very fortunate enough to have a front row seat to the following concerts! The concert featured some of their classic songs, as well as some quirky jokes from the Gregory Brothers. In the beginning of the concert, they transitioned their main theme song to the quite popular meme of right now “Toto – Africa”. Such a hot, spicy meme! Some of the other highlights would include “Backing Up Song”, with the joke before the song being just long enough to backup the Gregory Brothers hard drive!
Though not everything was going as planned for Schmoyoho. There were some slight technical issues, involving one of the microphones cutting out the auto completely. Nevertheless, it did not stop this trio of awesomeness. The fans were also supportive and they restarted the song with more energy than ever. Though the fans were a little more nervous, reserved watching the band perform. Towards the end of the show, everyone sprang forward to the front of the crowd and started singing their hearts out! Double rainbow all the way!
Performing the greatest hits from the different eras of Youtube, I was secretly hoping for some of their fellow Youtuber songify songs. My wish was granted, having a great compilation of Youtube greatness was fulfilled. From JackSepticEye to Markiplier, they had a variety of songified Youtube creator songs. Admittedly, I was a little bummed out that they did not play the songify of Jontron, “Titenic”. Though I do understand the controversial climate revolving around Jontron’s channel these days. So I can understand why the Gregory Brothers, choose to kind of pass on the song.
Seeing Schmoyoho live was a great experience altogether, you would not believe how good it was until you get the opportunity to see them live yourself. You may be a little skeptical, considering their content is auto tuned clips of pop culture. But the musical skills and the personalities of Michael, Andrew, and Evan really shine through their performance. I know what you are thinking… No, they are no auto tuned either. They have such amazing vocals and some sick skills on their instruments. Though the key-tars a nice, funky touch! Overall if you have a chance to see Schmoyoho, the Gregory Brothers I would highly recommend it. Whether you are a fan or not, their content is for everyone. Seeing them live really emphases who they are, you can truly see their creativity shine through.
